Halethorpe Station # 5 Challenge Coin
"The
Nickel"
What is the Challenge Coin? A morale booster for individual companies in
the form of a coin. The military has been using them for years but we've
adopted it for the fire service and hope to see a new tradition grow.
Station 5 personnel, while out socially, may "challenge" other
station members by throwing down their "Nickel" on the table.
Anyone not able to immediately produce their coin is responsible for a round of
drinks. If all members meet the challenge and produce their coin, the
person who initiated the challenge is then responsible for a round of
drinks. Non-numbered coins may be given away as a sign of appreciation to
others for meeting any number of "challenges".
Our Station 5 "Nickel" was conceived in 2007 by members of 'A'
shift. It is approximately 1 3/4" in diameter. The obverse features
the official Station 5 ”Southwest Border Patrol" patch and numbered Maltese
cross. An exploding "Powder Keg" is displayed on the reverse.
It is finished in brushed antique silver with color graphics.
Current and former personnel assigned to Halethorpe Station # 5 are allowed to
purchase only one specially numbered coin. Anyone may purchase an
unlimited quantity of non-numbered coins for the purpose of collecting or
trading.
Contact a member of Halethorpe Station# 5 'A' shift to purchase your own
"Nickel" Challenge Coin. Cost per coin is $8.00 numbered or
non-numbered.
